Upgrading Infrastructure: The Monterey One Water Headworks Project

  • YearOctober 10, 2024

The Monterey One Water Project in Marina, California, represents a critical upgrade to a major regional wastewater treatment facility. The project began in September 2021 to address a significant operational issue at the headworks structure. Excess solids entering the plant were overwhelming the bar screens, causing frequent clogs and impacting overall system efficiency.

The scope of work included demolition of the existing polyline system, installation of a new steel pipeline with welded flanges, and the integration of electric actuated knife gates. The team also removed and upgraded multiple slide gates inside the headworks structure. Each of the five valves required carefully planned three-hour shutdowns, coordinated with Monterey One staff to minimize operational disruptions.

Despite facing equipment delivery delays—including valves, gates, and other critical components—the project moved forward successfully through close collaboration between the construction team and facility operators. Extensive planning went into safety protocols, equipment needs, and manpower to ensure a smooth and efficient process during shutdowns and installation.

Completed in early 2025, the Monterey One Water Headworks Project has modernized the facility’s infrastructure, improved system reliability, and enhanced the plant’s ability to handle high solid loads efficiently.

The Result: A safer, more resilient, and higher-performing headworks system designed to support long-term wastewater treatment needs in Monterey County.
